Batoche, Saskatchewan
Batoche, Saskatchewan, is a small village located on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River. It is best known as the site of the historic Battle of Batoche, which took place during the North-West Rebellion of 1885. The battle resulted in the defeat of Louis Riel and his Métis forces by Major General Frederick Middleton and his Northwest Field Force. Today, Batoche is a quiet community of some 500 residents. Despite its small size, it is an important part of Canadian history and has been designated as a National Historic Site. Visitors to Batoche can learn about the events of 1885 at the Batoche National Historic Site, which includes a visitor centre, walking trails, and a reconstructed Métis village.
